Kybella (Deoxycholic Acid)

What is Kybella?

Kybella is a non-surgical injectable used to treat submental (“double-chin”) fullness.

It is the only FDA approved pharmaceutical for the treatment of submental fat.

How Does It Work?

Deoxycholic acid, the active ingredient in Kybella, is a cytolytic agent that physically destroys fat cells (adipocytes) in the area of injection.

This results in the permanent reduction of fat in the treated area.

What to Expect…

Before the Treatment

  • Consultation:

You'll meet with a provider to discuss your goals, medical history, and determine if Kybella is the right option for you.

  • Preparation:

To reduce swelling and irritation, your provider may advise avoiding alcohol, caffeine, high-sodium foods, and vigorous exercise for 24-48 hours before and after the treatment.

During the Treatment

  • Marking the Area:

The provider will mark the specific areas under your chin for the injections.

  • Numbing:

You may receive a topical numbing cream or have ice applied to the area to improve comfort during the injections.

  • Injections:

Fine-gauge needles are used to inject deoxycholic acid into the fat under your chin. You may receive many individual injections.

  • Duration:

The entire injection session is typically short, usually lasting about 15 to 20 minutes.

After The Treatment

Temporary Side Effects:

Expect some swelling, bruising, pain, and redness at the injection sites. Some lingering firmness or tingling can also occur.

Managing Side Effects:

You can apply ice packs for 20 minutes at a time to reduce swelling, and over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen can help with discomfort. Some providers recommend a chin strap to help with swelling.

Post-Treatment Care:

Follow your provider's instructions for caring for the treated area, which may include avoiding strenuous activity for the first 24-48 hours.

Multiple Sessions:

Most patients require several treatment sessions, spaced several weeks apart, to achieve optimal results.

 FAQs

 FAQs

  • Deoxycholic acid is a natural substance found in the stomach that is essential for breaking down and absorbing dietary fat. Kybella uses a synthetic version of this naturally occurring acid to target and destroy fat cells under the chin. Once these fat cells are destroyed, they can no longer store or accumulate fat, meaning that no additional treatments are expected once you achieve your desired aesthetic goal.

  • For many individuals submental fullness, more commonly known as a “double chin” is often genetically determined.

The natural aging process also may contribute to the development of submental fullness due to the reduction of vital proteins such as collagen and elastin production that diminish the structure and integrity of skin over time.

While weight gain can of course influence the extent of submental fullness, Kybella has been found to be particularly effective in those who have experienced stubborn fat throughout their life that has remained relatively resistant to diet and exercise.

  • You may be familiar with the standard injection technique for Kybella, which involves using a small needle to inject tiny amounts of the solution in a grid-like pattern. However, superior results have been achieved using an off-label technique that requires a deep understanding of anatomy and precise knowledge of injection depth. This method should only be performed by advanced injectors.

The off-label technique allows for treatment of fat more laterally (or away from the midline) and yield more aggressive results with fewer treatments, less swelling, bruising, and post-procedure soreness with the injection of approximately 3 vials within one session.

  • You can usually go back to your regular activity level 24 hours after the procedure. However, you should avoid strenuous activity for the first 48 hours, stay hydrated, eat a healthy diet, and sleep with your head elevated. Swelling in the area typically lasts about two weeks.

  • Kybella results gradually become visible over a few weeks and often appear natural. While you may see a noticeable improvement within 4 to 6 weeks after the procedure. Results continue to develop between 4-6 months after the procedure. The effects are permanent.

  • Once the fat cells beneath the chin are destroyed, they can no longer accumulate or store fat, resulting in a permanently redefined jawline.

    • You should not receive KYBELLA® if you have an infection in the treatment area.

    • Before receiving KYBELLA®, tell your healthcare provider about all of your medical conditions, including if you: Have had or plan to have surgery on your face, neck, or chin; have had cosmetic treatments on your face, neck, or chin; have had or have medical conditions in or near the neck area; have had or have trouble swallowing; have bleeding problems; are pregnant or plan to become pregnant; are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed.

    • Tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Especially tell your healthcare provider if you take a medicine that prevents the clotting of your blood (antiplatelet or anticoagulant medicine).

  • To determine if Kybella is suitable for you, your anatomy will be assessed, and your medical history will be thoroughly reviewed.

It is important to distinguish between skin laxity and adipose (fat) tissue before proceeding with the injections. Your provider will evaluate both aspects to decide if this treatment is appropriate for you.

Before performing the procedure, your provider will take photos and conduct a detailed analysis of your individual anatomy. Your unique structural landmarks to ensure the safest possible injection.
