Polydioxanone Threads (PDO Threads)
What are PDO Threads?
PDO threads are used in cosmetic procedures that utilize special medical-grade threads made from polydioxanone (PDO). This safe, biodegradable material has been trusted by surgeons for medical procedures since the 1980s.
PDO Threads degrade gradually over time through a process of hydrolysis. Generally, PDO Threads can be expected to degrade within 6-12 months, although this timeframe may vary depending on the specific product and the treatment area.
How Do They Work?
The presence of these sutures in your skin triggers cells in your body called fibroblasts to produce more collagen. Collagen is the protein that gives your skin its structure and elasticity. Loss of collagen is one of the main causes of aging skin.
Though the thread itself typically dissolves by 6 months, studies have shown results lasting up to 12-24 months even after the complete dissolution of the thread, as the absorption process stimulates the reconstruction of collagen fibers, ensuring a lasting impact.
Types of Threads
Key Differences between Smooth & Twist Threads:
Volume:
Twist threads provide more volume by giving a larger surface area for collagen production than smooth threads, which are primarily for stimulation.
Application:
Smooth threads are good for skin texture and fine lines, while twist threads are better for filling deeper lines and areas of deficit.
Mechanism:
Smooth threads create a collagen-stimulating mesh, while twist threads add that with a coiled structure that offers more bulk and collagen stimulation.
Threads are often categorized by three main features: smooth, twist, and barb.
Threads can be even further classified into two main types : “Smooth” PDOs: which emcompasses both ‘twist’ and ‘smooth’ threads and “Lifting” aka ‘barbed’ threads.
FAQs
FAQs
-
The number of threads and type of thread is determined by several factors; the area being treated, the desired result, and the patient’s skin quality. This will be assessed by your provider on an individual basis.
-
This depends on the type of thread, the individual’s metabolism, skin condition, patient’s age, and treatment technique. Smooth threads typically last up to six months while barbed threads can last up to 18 months.
-
The price is determined at a consult depending on the area being treated, number and type of thread needed along with the patient’s baseline, desired outcome and budget.
